The garden design process – step by step

Initial Consultation

Whether you’re starting from scratch with a new garden or refreshing an existing scheme, having your garden professionally designed will enable you to realise its true potential. I combine extensive botanical knowledge with elegant, practical design to ensure your new garden continues to delight long after it’s finished.

1. Survey

Once commissioned, I start with a survey of your garden before starting the design. For intimate spaces, I measure up myself, but for larger sites, I commission a professional surveyor (quoted as a separate fixed fee). The site survey records all measurements, levels and main features.

2a. Outline Plan

Once stages 1-3 are approved I create the outline plan, which shows the overall layout of the garden. At this stage, we have not finalised material choices or design features. Once you’re satisfied with the Outline Plan, I begin on the detailed design work.

2b. Mood board

I assemble a mood board of inspiring images, colours and patterns, helping you to visualise elements of the design and bring ideas to life. Mood boards can be really helpful in describing abstract concepts, and for giving you an opportunity to say what you like and what you don’t.

3. Presentation Plan

Once you’ve approved the initial plans, a presentation plan is developed. This shows all the key elements of the design, noting the types of materials and finished levels.

4. Construction Details

For hard landscaping features like walls and paths, I create separate construction details. These are necessary for your contractor to quote accurately and to follow during the build.

5. Planting Plans

The planting plan specifies the plants’ exact positions, sizes and numbers. Plants are the essence of a garden, and design is as great a factor in using them as in the garden’s landscaping.

6. Tender documentation

Once you’ve signed off the designs, the works go out to tender. To implement the designs, I work with a select group of landscape contractors, ensuring the highest standards of construction and timely project completion. I can assist with tendering your garden works to reputable landscape contractors to obtain quotations, or you can use your existing contractor if you have someone you know and trust.

7. Additional Consultancy

If you would like me to attend meetings with other parties, such as planners, architects and contractors, which have not previously been defined in the scope of works, then these activities will be billed separately at my current hourly rate (available upon request).

8. Project Monitoring

I can provide as much or as little support as you would like in monitoring the works and ensuring the plans are being followed. I would typically put together a schedule of visits as part of a fee proposal for this, if required.

9. Construction of the Soft Landscaping

Once you’ve signed off the designs, the works can go out to tender. To implement the designs, I work with a select group of landscape contractors, ensuring the highest standards of construction and timely completion of your project. I can assist with the tendering of the garden works to reputable landscape contractors to obtain quotations for you, or you can use your existing contractor if you already have someone you know and trust.

Expert Advice

Depending on the garden’s location, I also offer maintenance service, consultancy and expert advice on an ad hoc basis.

MAINTAIN & GROW

A garden takes time to get established after the project is finished. Good aftercare is vital. I can provide a written maintenance plan for you to look after the garden yourself, or to brief your gardener or maintenance contractor.
