About Sam
20 years in horticulture
I started gardening as a child, growing tomatoes and Pelargoniums on our roof terrace. I was captivated by the colours, the wildlife and the pleasure of watching something grow and bloom.
I embarked on a career in multimedia design, but I indulged my passion by volunteering at my local community garden, perhaps knowing that I’d return to horticulture in the future.
After completing the prestigious Kew Diploma, I worked at Buckingham Palace, the Royal College of Physicians, Eltham Palace (English Heritage) and the Imperial War Museum as head gardener. To enhance my design knowledge, I studied landscape design at Capel Manor College.
Now, after nearly 20 years in horticulture, I run my own garden design practice. I love working with clients to help them get the pleasure from their garden that I get from mine.

My gallery captures the images of the gardens and plants which inspire my design and feed my creative thinking. The gallery includes- design principles, beautiful planting and photo’s of the natural world in response to the changing seasons.
I’ll also be considering the choice of materials used in gardens and the detailing which are vital in creating a unique sense of place. It’s distilling an atmosphere in the garden which makes them special; whether it’s a peaceful and serene space or vibrant and uplifting; I hope these images help you discover plants, features and moods which appeal to you too.
